Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world. Its HDI ranks 182 out of 189 countries. There are only around 10 qualified optometrists in the entire country for a population of 7 million people. Sixty percent of the population lives on less than $1.25 a day. In collaboration with the British NGO Vision Action, we have inaugurated a visual care center, which includes an optical shop and an optical workshop, operated by two local professionals whom we have sponsored to complete their training as optician-optometrists in Gambia over two years.
Vision Mundi has so far supported the construction of two optical centers in Sierra Leone, this one in Koidu and another in the Port Loko region, each operated by two local optometrists.
