We help create a fairer and more caring world through the fight against blindness

243 million people have severely reduced vision and 36 million are completely blind

At least two thirds of cases are due to treatable causes

90% live in low-resource countries

1 billion people cannot see well because they do not have access to glasses

Why we were born

Why we were born

Vision Mundi was founded in 2004 with the aim of fighting blindness in disadvantaged regions. It was created by the ophthalmologist from La Rioja, Julio Yangüela Rodilla.

We believe that fighting blindness is a powerful and transformative way to combat inequality and restore dignity to people. This is why initiatives like Vision Mundi are an effective tool to promote development in the countries that need it most.

Our values

01

Training

We train local professionals so they can lead change within their communities. We support their development through scholarships, mentoring, and partnerships with specialized visual health centres, ensuring that the knowledge gained is preserved and produces sustainable improvements in their environment.

02

Sustainability

We design every project with long-term sustainability in mind, both economically and technologically. We work alongside local stakeholders to create lasting solutions that can be maintained without external support and that reach an increasing number of people in each region.

03

Adaptation

We listen to and analyse the realities of each territory to adapt our actions to the context. We value local cultures, needs, and rhythms, adjusting our interventions to be respectful, effective, and able to integrate naturally into the daily life of each community.

04

Awareness

We want to bring visibility to what often goes unnoticed and raise social awareness. To achieve this, we organise biennial conferences, cultural activities, and outreach initiatives designed to inspire collaboration, strengthen support networks, and bring the reality of visual health closer to a wider audience.

04

Ethical commitment

We are guided by respect for human dignity and the defence of fundamental rights. We promote equality, social justice, and responsibility in every decision. We act with transparency to ensure that our initiatives remain coherent and truly benefit those who need them most.
